Know Your Barista

House of Coffees Leading Ladies

When it comes to getting our caffeine fix, the options are limitless. But for many of us, the local coffee shop is much like the bar scene from the sitcom Cheers. At least that’s what it is like at House of Coffees in the heart of Lodi wine country. When you walk in the door, the baristas behind the counter welcome guests by calling them out by name, making their favorite coffee without having to ask, and even whipping up a surprise for the littles that are tagging along. Making Coffee is more than just a job, it is truly an art form. The bottom line, these baristas, and this coffee shop, is like its own micro-community. A community that feels like family. Because after playdates, meetings, and little league, that is exactly what House of Coffees means to Lodi. Barista’s like this, obviously care for their regulars and those who come in for a quick cup of coffee, they may even pick up a Barista Course Melbourne, or one in their vicinity, to add onto their skills and bring a better hospitality service to the neighborhood/s.

Sami Terra, Owner, Barista

How long have you been with HOC?

I’ve owned the shop for a little over a year and a half, but I’ve been a part of the HOC family my entire life. I’m so blessed to be part of HOC’s long-storied success.

Favorite thing about being a barista?

The ability to be artistic and creative while getting to know people. I’m passionate about coffee, but I’m more passionate about community. I get to know amazing, incredible people doing this job. The relationships you create when spending a day at HOC are irreplaceable.

What are you doing when you aren’t running the show?

When I’m not making coffee, I’m usually doing more work for HOC! But in my free time I love to spend time sitting on the beach. My husband and I love to camp and explore new areas. In the summer you can find us paddling the river and shopping at the farmers market.

What is your favorite drink?

My favorite drink is the blended Nutty Hawaiian because the macadamia nut is perfect for a hot day and reminds me of Hawaii!

What is your favorite part about being a barista?

The people. Over the past 5 years I’ve probably [served] the whole town of Lodi. It’s amazing to see people connect. We’ve seen people meet here, fall in love, have babies, and watch them grow.

What is your favorite drink?

Without a doubt, an iced Equality. The mix of the rich, dark chocolate and sweet, white chocolate paired with our espresso is the perfect combination.

What is your favorite thing about being a barista?

My favorite thing would have to be the relationships I’ve built over the years. Especially here at HOC, our coworkers and customers are our family.

When you aren’t slanging coffee, what do you like to do?

Even on my days off, you can often catch me at the shop hanging out enjoying a coffee, a beer or a glass of wine.
