The Do’s & Don’ts of Lip Injections

By Nora Heston Tarte

Lip injections are definitely on trend in 2019. Many women are going bigger, using fillers to create a fuller lip while others are focused on creating facial symmetry. Regardless of the goal, we have some dos and don’ts for getting lip fillers in 2019.

DO choose your provider carefully. Many medical professionals are legally allowed to provide lip injection services to clients, however, not all of them are well trained in this application. This isn’t the time to focus on saving money—choose a person who is skilled and trained in lip injections to prevent side effects and poor results.

DO know the appropriate ratios. According to Dr. Ruby Gill, medical director at the Gill Medical Group and Gill Aesthetic Institute, there are specific ratios that lips should adhere to. For many, when comparing top to bottom, 1:1.6, is considered ideal. However, it does change based on the individual. If you’re getting injections, try to achieve or maintain a ratio that complements your face.

DON’T go too big. The goal is to create symmetry not just between the top and bottom lip but also on the face as a whole. Lips should balance other facial features including eyes and nose.

DO use the right type of filler. Different fillers have different viscosity and this affects how natural lips will look. Age dictates what type of filler should be used, and this is a question the medical professional completing your service should be able to answer.

DON’T rush. Significant changes in lip size and shape can be done over time but it is a gradual process. Sometimes several appointments will be needed, and likely spaced out, to make a big difference.

DO follow aftercare instructions. Take medication to reduce the reoccurrence of cold sores if you have suffered them in the past, ice after the procedure to bring down swelling and discomfort, and take over-the-counter medication for pain as needed.

DO choose your timing wisely. Getting lip injections too close to an event may be a big mistake. For many, lips swell and it can take about a week for fillers to settle where they should. Not to mention, despite the use of a numbing agent during the procedure, some pain is expected, so you might want to rest day one.
