Beauty Beyond Summer

By Lindsey Rodrian

Transitioning our make-up from summer to fall gives opportunity to enhance our look and call on old favorites. We sat down with make-up artist Otilia Aguila and stylist Lisa Martinez from JC Salon Studio in Stockton for the inside scoop!

  1. Lighten Up & Moisturize- The summer sun and cooler conditions to come will dry out our skin a bit- but fear not! Color Corrective (CC) cream is your all around answer to flawless, moisturized skin, with a natural look. Similar to BB cream, CC has additional moisturizing properties, and offers more coverage than a tinted moisturizer. Start CC application at your T-zone, and work your way out. Use a beauty blender (the tear-drop shaped sponge applicator) for even coverage and a nice finish.

  1. Create a Flawless Finish- Concealer is a go-to for dark circles, red spots and any problem areas. To avoid a caked-on look, make sure to moisturize well and use a primer with a silicone base to keep the concealer from creasing. Apply concealer after your CC, BB, or foundation, so that the concealer blends into what coverage your using- also resulting in less need for the thick concealer, thanks to the coverage your receiving from your foundation application.
  1. Highlight Your Eyes- Say hello to burnt-orange and red-brown eye shadows as we welcome fall. These hues compliment all eye colors and skin tones. For seamless application, start with eye shadow first, so if any falls to your under eye, it can easily be washed away. Always start with a primer and use a fluffy brush for blending and a tapered brush for application on creases.
  1. Accent your Lips- As we transition to fall, we have an array of lip colors to choose from. Nothing beats the warm neutral colors, and the nude, almost brown shades that are considered timeless. To keep your pout lipstick ready, consider a weekly scrub to exfoliate. Use of a lipstick primer conceals lips so you get the truest color from your lipstick, and of course, always start with balm so your pout is silky smooth.

  1. Don’t be Afraid of Liners- Eyeliner can be unforgiving for us girls with a shaky hand or oily skin. Fortunately, using a gel liner over a pencil or liquid makes for easy application that won’t smudge. The gel is easier to control thanks to its brush!
  1. Say Goodbye to Waterproof Mascara- Now that we won’t be sweating excessively or spending so many days by the pool, the use of waterproof mascara diminishes. This particular type of mascara actually dries out your lashes, so it should only be used for special occasishutterstock_241817893ons.

There are tons of great long-wearing brands out there without the drying qualities. For perfect application, start at the base of your lashes and do a bump and a wiggle. Using a brush that has a ball tip applicator allows you to extend the outer lashes creating an even fuller look. Don’t forget to never pump your mascara tube! Instead swirl the wand in little circles.

7. Sweep on New Shades of Blush- Timeless pinks are always pretty. But, the trending burnt-orange hues are available in blushes, too, and their warm orange undertones work well on all skin shades. Use a soft angled blush brush, start at the apple of your cheek and work your way up!

8. Pull Your Hair Back –Topknots rule this season, and avoiding hot tools and hair prep save time and keep hair healthy. To accent your fresh face- pull your hair into a ponytail, fishtail braid your hair and then wrap it into a bun. For those with shorter hair, a side knot bun works with bob length hair and longer, keeping your hair out of your face and looking cute to boot.
