John DeNigris began his career at Habanero Hots as a dishwasher, and now, is the proud owner of one of Lodi’s hot spots. The restaurant opened in 1981 as a family owned and operated Mexican food restaurant. After 16 years of loyalty and commitment, DeNigris bought the business in 1996, where he continues to serve the original recipes handed down from four generations.
Now serving a twist of Tex-Mex inspired food, John has infused his own ideas with the traditional recipes to create one of the most inviting dining experiences in town. The restaurant serves an impressive and colorful menu that is constantly changing thanks to seasonal favorites. From gringo grubs to sizzling faitjas and Habanero’s famous appetizers, “There is something here for everyone,” says John.
Other than the mouthwatering food menu, Habanero Hots’ bar includes more than 180 different types of tequila, which he welcomes everyone to come taste on the first Wednesday of every month. In addition, the bar also serves more than 25 different types of margaritas that are just as creative, and fresh, as the food. “If strawberries are in season, customers can come in and grab a fresh strawberry margarita,” adds DeNigris, whose food and bar menu mimics seasonal freshness.
DeNigris, who traveled from New York to Central California where he has since raised a family and a successful business, is proud to serve authentic, grassroots recipes. “From the first time I stepped foot in the kitchen, I had my eye on owning my own restaurant,” says DeNigris, who knew early on and set his own goals to one day own his own restaurant. One of the most distinctive attributes of Habanero Hots is its “Beat The Heat” challenge. Customers who are bold enough can chose to eat one of the hottest peppers in the world – a habanero. Participants, who must first sign a waiver, can get a shirt and have their picture posted on the restaurant’s “Wall of Flame.” “Thousands of people from all over come to the restaurant for the challenge,” says DeNigris. In addition to the restaurant’s spicy offerings and Beat the Heat Challenge, the business is home to one of the most extensive hot sauce shops around, truly living up to the restaurant’s name. Upon entering Habanero Hots, guests are greeted with a variety of more than 150 different types of sauces. From mild to extremely hot, guests are sure to find something that meets their spiciest desires.
The food is impressive, and draws regulars frequently. The core of his business, says DeNigris, is the fresh ingredients that he gets as locally as possible, “Fresh is a flavor!” He adds, “We take pride in every single dish that comes out of the kitchen.” Not only is DeNigris and his staff attentive to each meal they create, their priority is to keep people coming back by providing an overall dining experience, from the food to the service, “We are absolutely dedicated to giving the best customer service.”
