Berghold Vineyards and Winery

Berghold 9 - Erik WaitIf you’re looking to take a trip back in time, Berghold Vineyards and Winery should be your next destination. Joe and Kay Berghold have been growing grapes in the Lodi area since 1986, and decided to expand their family run business by opening a winery in May of 2005. Today, the vineyards take up a total of 85 acres. Ironically, the name Berghold can be translated to mean “vineyard worker”.

The winery and tasting room is uniquely furnished with antiques from the mid-1800s to 1900s that have been collected over the years. “It’s very warm and inviting,” says Julia Berghold, general manager of the winery. “The woodwork is rich-toned and the antiques have been restored.” Some of the features to look for are the stained glass windows, piano, chandeliers and armoires. “The furnishings are a story,” she adds. “Most people’s jaws hit the floor because people don’t expect this in Lodi and ask why isn’t it in Napa or Sonoma?”

A variety of wines are offered including Merlot, Viognier, Syrah and more. According to Julia, one of the most popular wines is the Crankcase, which is a mix of four varietals. If you can’t get enough of the delicious vino selection, you can sign up to become a member of the wine club. Invitations to exclusive events, discounts, and a winery newsletter are just a handful of the perks members receive after joining.

Excellent customer service is another element that makes the winery stand out. Whether you’re looking for the story behind a certain antique or just some friendly conversation, the winery is a very family-oriented place. “Our approach to overall customer experience is that it’s not just wine tasting. We view wine tasting as entertainment,” notes Julia. “People are there to be entertained and have an experience.”

In addition to the tasting room, there is also a gift shop and picnic area on the property. The shop carries everything from home décor to women and men’s apparel. Many special events and private parties are also held at the winery. From wine club events to weddings, the property provides a perfect setting to make any event memorable.

Next time you’re in Lodi, drop by the tasting room for a glass of wine and a few good stories. There’s no doubt you’ll walk away with some memories you’ll cherish and a new go-to spot at Berghold Vineyards and Winery.    By Michele Bird
