Summertime calls for exploration and outdoor activity. With the Delta at our fingertips, fishing is an excellent way to enjoy both the sunshine and resources of our area. Jim Pickens, owner of Lodi’s The Fisherman’s Friend, says the Delta is home to a variety of fish just waiting to be caught and enjoyed. Species like Catfish, Bluegill, Sturgeon, Striped Bass and Salmon can all be caught throughout the San Joaquin seasons, offering opportunity to consume fresh, unprocessed and chemical free fish straight from the ocean. “You are catching what you’re eating, and being self sustainable is truly satisfying,” says Jim.

For those looking to dip their toes in the sport, Jim says a stop at The Fisherman’s Friend is the perfect start. “We are a full service shop, so you can come in with bare hands and say, ‘I want to go fishing for this specific fish, at this location’ and the staff will walk you through needed equipment, and even show you how to tie knots and bait hooks.” The shop even offers free seminars, with professional guides, at the beginning of each season.

As Jim explains, some may be apprehensive to the sport, thinking skill, a boat and expensive equipment is needed, but that is not the case. The Delta offers a variety of bountiful offshore spots and with a little direction, the sport is quite simple and relaxing. Simply get a fishing license, available at a variety of shops including Jim’s, and delve in to the healthy hobby that offers exercise, relaxation and satisfaction.
